Listing Description

Canonbie Christian Retreat Centre

Canonbie Christian Retreat Centre provides conference and holiday facilities in the scenic Scottish borders.

The Retreat Centre comprises Byreburnfoot House, together with our two luxury self-catering cottages and landscaped gardens.  It’s the ideal setting for individuals, families and groups to spend quality time with the Lord and to be refreshed in body, mind and spirit.

Byreburnfoot House is a Victorian country house built on the River Esk around 1850 by the Duke of Buccleugh for his head forester.  The original stable block was converted in 2011 into cottages; these have recently been refurbished to a high standard and two are available as self-catering holiday accommodation (see below).  See our website at www.canonbieretreat.org.uk

The estate is set in a quiet and attractive rural area just a mile outside the village of Canonbie, which is rich in historical significance since Canonbie was the site of a medieval Augustinian priory.  We’re also located in the ‘Debatable Lands’ and close to the Gilnockie Clan Armstrong Centre, once notorious for Reiver activity.

The area is a haven for wildlife and is great for fishing, walking and cycling.  Alternatively, you can take a short stroll to the nearby waterfall or simply unwind in our gardens.  Our holiday cottages are a convenient base from which to explore Dumfries and Galloway, the Borders (including the Reiver Trail) and Cumbria.  We’re within a short drive from Kielder Forest, Carlisle Castle, Cathedral and Museum, Hadrian’s Wall, Lanercost Priory, the northern part of the Lake District and the coast.

Conference facilities within Byreburnfoot House

Byreburnfoot House has two comfortable lounges to choose from, ideal for day conferences, prayer retreats, training days, home group get-togethers and leadership team awaydays.  Both rooms are light and airy with wood-burning stoves, central heating and air conditioning.  They come complete with free Wi-Fi, TV screen, music centre and DVD player.

We can facilitate up to 20 people in the Drawing Room, and up to 6 in the Sitting Room. A buffet lunch and refreshments are provided.  Conferences and prayer retreats usually run from 9:30am to 4:30pm, but longer times can be arranged in advance.  You can also book a half-day retreat with refreshments but not lunch.

For more details about hiring our rooms, please go to our website at www.canonbieretreat.org.uk or use the email address at the end of this listing.

Two self-catering cottages –The Stables and Garden Cottage

Our two self-catering luxury holiday cottages in the grounds of Byreburnfoot House are the ideal destination for a recreational break.  They have been sensitively developed to retain the charm of the original stable block yet they’re fitted and equipped to a luxurious modern standard to ensure that guests have a relaxed and pleasant stay.

All the beds have Hypnos mattresses to ensure a good night’s sleep, and both cottages have double glazing and central heating. A travel cot (no bedding provided) and a high chair are available on request. All bed linen, towels, tea towels, hand towels and oven gloves are provided.  Heating and electricity are included, as is a welcome tray and a starter basket of logs.

We have an STR (Short Term Rental) licence for a maximum of 4 people in each cottage.

The cottages have a sunny, south-facing aspect and pleasant rural views.  Each has a private garden with garden furniture including a parasol and barbecue facilities to the front.  They share a private access road and have gravelled parking to the front.

The Stables (sleeps 4)

The Stables has three bedrooms and one en-suite bathroom and one shower room.

On the ground level the cottage has an attractive reception hall, a large living room with a solid oak floor, wood burning stove and flat screen TV.  There is also an open plan kitchen/diner which is fully equipped with a hob and oven, dishwasher, microwave oven, fridge-freezer and washing machine, with French doors to the garden.

In the lounge there are two sofas and two armchairs with coffee tables.

A boiler room with drying facilities and the family shower room are also located on the ground floor.

Upstairs there are three comfortable bedrooms.  The spacious master bedroom has a king-sized bed, en-suite bathroom with corner bath and shower over, and French doors that lead out to an attractive decking area.  There are two further single bedrooms, one with a 3’6” Art Deco metal bed and the other with a 3’ antique metal bed.

Garden Cottage (sleeps 4)

Garden Cottage has a fitted kitchen with integrated appliances including a dishwasher, microwave oven and fridge/freezer, and has a separate laundry/drying room adjoining.  At ground level there is a double bedroom, large walk-in shower room and an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area with a wood-burning stove and flat-screen TV.

Two further first-floor bedrooms (both single rooms) are accessed via a spiral staircase.  This layout means that the cottage will be ideal for couples or smaller groups.

This property may be suitable for guests with mobility problems.

As well as being attractive properties for relaxing holidays, both our cottages are also suitable for small residential conferences and prayer retreats.  In addition, they can be used to provide accommodation for up to 8 people attending a conference in Byreburnfoot House lasting longer than one day.

The details below refer to the cottages.  You can find out more about both cottages on our website at www.canonbieretreat.org.uk

Gardens

We have several attractive outdoor spaces for you to enjoy, where you can simply wander or sit.  They’re a beautiful setting for quiet reflection or for meeting with others.  You’ll find tables and chairs, mostly with parasols, throughout the gardens.  You can also enjoy views over the River Esk and the surrounding countryside.
